Sometimes these spots don’t feel like Texas

If you’re just starting out, these 4 essentials are the most important pieces I learned 7 years ago when I started this journey.
1. Master the Exposure Triangle – ISO, shutter speed, aperture, and white balance work like a formula to get the perfect shot. Knowing how each one affects your image is crucial!
2. Understand Lighting – Lighting can make or break a photo. Learn how to work with different lighting conditions: soft lighting at sunset, harsh midday sun, backlighting, split lighting, spotty lighting, diffused lighting and more. Adapt to whatever the scene gives you!
3. Editing is Key, But Don’t Rely on It – Getting your settings right in-camera is SO much easier than trying to fix everything in post. Start with good exposure and lighting, and editing will be a breeze. Try preset packs in Lightroom to speed up your workflow.
4. YouTube is Your Best Friend – You don’t need to figure everything out on your own. Tutorials are everywhere. I learned so much from @jessicakobeissi and @petermckinnon . Check them out on YT for all the beginner tips!

This was the first time I’ve ever arrived to a session, pulled out my camera, took the first shot, and then BUCKETS OF RAIN start pouring from the sky. There was no letting up, so we rescheduled for a week later, and the sun really came out to apologize for embarrassing me like that. Side note, these were the sweetest kids and the funnest family ever!

Tips for your champagne pop photo:

1. Pop off the top before you start shooting vs popping and shaking all at once. That’s way too much pressure. The bottle won’t start spraying until you shake it! Pop the top, get set, then start shaking!
2. I can’t speak for other photographers, but instead of facing out, face towards me, spray as much towards my camera as possible, and spray UP not OUT. It’s okay if my camera gets a few champagne drops, it won’t hurt! That’s the best way to get all the droplets in the frame of the shot!
3. Might be obvious but remember your face! It can be very easy to give an “oh sh*t” crazy face as a result of the chaos, but try your best to remember what your face will look like in the photos!

This was one of the most successful champagne pops I’ve done, and we were thrilled with the results!
